Parcel Query & Mapping
The increasing demand for accurate land information for planning and development by municipal agencies has spurred the conversion of paper cadastral records to digital GIS formats. This automation has made it easier for those in government to access the data quickly for decision support from their desktop or web browser.
Commercial software packages have been developed to publish these data on the web. Web publishing provides these data throughout the enterprise without having to maintain individual workstation software and data. In some cases, the cost of these commercial systems are often prohibitive for many rural municipalities.
OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE ALTERNATIVE
Publicly funded research has focused on developing “Open Source” tools for publishing cadastral data on the Web. IGRE application developers followed these developments and selected the Minnesota MapServer®, a map scripting tool that excels at rendering spatial data (maps, images, and vector data) over the web, as one of our favorite solutions for web mapping. Through our research efforts, IGRE developed the Parcel Query Template (IPQT), a cost effective web implementation of the MapServer code for publishing cadastre and other data to the Internet. An implementation of the IPQT for the Ogemaw County Equalization Department can be viewed at http://ogemawgis.com/parcelquery/website/.
