The Global Map Project

This effort is gathering momentum! The Global Map is an international effort
among national mapping organizations to map the world at a common
scale/resolution (1:1M/1km) using the same data dictionary. The participants
have compiled all new Atlas frameworks at one million scale. One of my USGS
colleagues is making a presentation during the upcoming ESRI UC about how they have agreed to harmonize these data with Mexico and Canada to produce
million-scale frameworks for North America. ESRI has a Global Map grants
program that provides technology to some participants. Links below to the
official site, one geared more to the Japanese public (Japan leads the Global
Map), and from ESRI.
